PLEASE HELP SAVE CHAMP!!

PLEASE SAVE CHAMP!!!

Champ is a 10-12 yr old Sheltie who was dumped on the side of the road with another Sheltie. They put him and his friend in a pet taxi and his friend got out somehow. Unfortunately the other one was not so lucky and was hit in the road. Its so sad that someone would just throw this little guy away like the trash. Not sure why, maybe because he was old? Who knows. But Champ needs your help. We took him to the vet today to get his shots and get checked out. Very happy to report he tested negative for heartworm.

But something else was wrong. The vet says he has a carnaissal tooth abscess and severe dental disease. Which means he has a very bad infection in his mouth because of his teeth. So bad that it has borrowed its way through the bottom of his cheek and to the outside of his face. He is on antibiotics to try and reduce the infection some and lessen the pain. But he must have dental surgery in order to have any kind of decent quality of life. Which of course is very very expensive. Without it he would have to be put to sleep. We are paying for as much of it as we can but cant afford all of it. He also has very little chance of adoption with these major health problems. So he needs your help. Please open your hearts to this sweet and loving boy. We are in desperate need of donations to help with his surgery. Any amount will help.

All donations can be made directly to Evendale Pet Hospital to Luv 4 Animals Rescue c/o Audra Hostens.

Over the phone with a credit/debit card at (513) 563-0410 or in person at 10519 Reading Rd. Cincinnati, OH 45241.

Please copy and send this on to everyone you know. Thank you for helping Champ and God Bless you all.

SHELTER OF THE MONTH IS PET-I-CARE IN NEW YORK, NY!

OUR MASCOTS..."WALLY AND SCOUT"

Pet-I-Care is an amazing organization run by a dedicated group of passionate individuals. They regularly whisk dogs and cats out of the New York Animal Control system just hours before they are scheduled to be euthanized and give them the love and attention they need. Pet-I-Care works closely with volunteer veterinarians, trainers and behaviorists to help the animals in their care get placed in permanent loving homes.

MEET BARRY

Our Mission
"Our dream is to have a state-of-the-art home for Pet-I-Care, to continue the work that desperately needs to be done. Our mission is to help the abandoned, abused, injured and forgotten dogs and cats of New York City, as we have been doing for the past 14 years, and to commit to finding them their loving and lasting home."

MARILYN AND LOBO
Our journey began when we happened to be present as an abandoned puppy, nearly hairless from skin mange, was presented to a local kill shelter. When the shelter attendant flashed a "thumbs down" sign condemning him to death, we literally whisked him away, treated his mange, and found him the greatest home. He has lived there without a single "bad hair day" for the past 13 years!!!

OUR CAT OF THE MONTH

MEET FRED

Pet-I-Care depends on the collective efforts of our volunteers, our foster homes, veterinarians, trainers and behaviorists. However, to continue our work, we need the continued support we receive from you. Our journey continues only because of your generosity over the years, and we thank you deeply for that. We also thank all of our wonderful volunteers who give the gift of their time and love.

SUCCESS STORIES: REAL PETS, REAL STORIES

Profile: Liberty
Gender: Female
Rescue Date: 2/23/08
Mission Number: 2

Updates:
After her arrival at JFK International airport, Libby drove to Northern Virginia with Amanda Lehneke. Amanda is Libby’s new Mom and the wife of the U.S. Army Lieutenant who cared for Libby in Iraq. In Northern Virginia, Amanda and Libby spent three weeks visiting Amanda’s in-laws who were overjoyed to get to know the rescued pup who was like having a little piece of their son home from Iraq early. After a nice long visit, Amanda drove Libby down to Florida to visit her own parents before making the long drive to their final destination near Seattle, WA. When the unit who befriended Libby returns from their tour in Iraq they will be stationed at a base near Seattle. Of course, Amanda and Libby are desperate to see the Lieutenant and the rest of the unit, so they will be there to meet them when they arrive home.

Story:
Liberty was found by U.S. soldiers in the aftermath of a house raid in which the enemy was detained and the army unit suffered a casualty. Libby followed the soldiers home and they secretly escorted her into their Coalition Outpost for protection from harm. Liberty quickly became a morale booster. She really helped the soldiers cope with their recent loss. Soon after that, another group of soldiers within the same unit befriended a little puppy named K-Pot. K-Pot and Libby became fast friends as they played and lived with the soldiers together.

Now, Liberty and K-Pot have a wonderful, loving future ahead of them here in the Untied States, but back in February 2008, their future was not so certain. At that time, Liberty and K-Pot were living with a unit of soldiers and serving as their “Force Protection K-9s.” Despite their designation, anyone who encountered the little puppies could easily surmise that they probably offered very little, if any, real protection. However, their official status as Force Protection K-9s bought the unit some more time to find a way to get them out of Iraq. But time is a precious commodity in a war zone and, as often happens in the Army, the unit was suddenly ordered to report to a Forward Operating Base (FOB) and leave Liberty and K-Pot behind. The unit knew that their moral-boosting companions would not survive if they were left to fend for themselves on streets of Iraq.

In a last ditch effort to save Liberty and K-Pot, the unit contacted SPCA International’s Operation Baghdad Pups with a plea for help. The SPCA International team mobilized quickly and set a plan of action in motion to send a representative from SPCA International to Baghdad to rescue these pups from certain death.

On February 23rd the quick response paid off when Liberty and K-Pot were welcomed home.

Quotes from the soldiers and family who love Liberty:

“I never thought this day would come! Liberty eased the trauma of dealing with casualties for my husband’s unit,” explains Amanda Lehneke. “I can’t imagine how difficult it would have been for him to leave her behind and that’s why we are donating as much as we can to keep Operation Baghdad Pups going. Operation Baghdad Pups needs to be able to continue helping as many soldiers and families as possible.”

“Thanks to the hard work of SPCA International, family and friends back home the pups are safe now and can have a new life in the U.S. Although we were all sad to see our little friends go we are extremely happy that they will be in the states waiting our return,” U.S. Army soldier who lived with Liberty and K-Pot.

Meet the Gang: Update on the San Nicolas Island Cats

Cooper is now a typical kitten—a playful purr monster. ©2009 The HSUS

Sybil, Danny, Mario, Chelsea, and Nick are in good company and glad to be alive. They have found sanctuary at The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona, Calif., with 48 of their closest friends, other feral cats who were to be euthanized on San Nicolas Island.

Animal technicians Kimberly D'Amico and Christine Jensen are the cats' "personal assistants," and have taken many of the cats from hissing and growling to purring and relaxing. Today, the cats have toys, reliable meals, special treats, and human kindness.

Home sweet home

On Sept. 23, 15 cats were introduced to their large new habitat, built thanks to the generosity of DoGreatGood.com.

The cats were placed in carriers and carefully moved from their temporary housing to their new habitat which includes another novelty not common on the dry island with sparse vegetation—trees!

Several 10-foot trees are carefully incorporated into the habitat in a way that allows the trees to continue growing but prevents the cats escape or the entry of other critters who could harm or be harmed by the cats.

"It was a very, very touching morning. Sybil was out first followed by Sandy and then Scar," said Christine Jensen, one of the cats' primary caretakers. Jensen and her colleagues were all very happy to see how the cats actually welcomed each other by rubbing on one another.

It didn't take long for Sandy to become the official greeter. She rubbed, licked, mewed and loved everyone as they exited their carriers. Scar was the first male to venture out. After saying hello to his female friends, he just rolled around, relaxed and enjoyed his new-found freedom.

Bob assisted Sandy as a greeter and although Sybil initially hissed at other cats, she did accept Zeus as her buddy.

Hamilton was the first to discover the tree. It was a great day for the cats, the wildlife center staff and companion animals staff at HSUS headquarters who, through videos, vicariously enjoyed the cats' introduction to their habitat.

Photos of the cats have been a big hit with headquarters staff who worked so hard to save the cats. Pictured are cats lounging in the trees or hiding among the rocks. As each day passes, the cats become more at ease in their new surroundings.

Meet a few of the cats

Cooper is now a typical kitten—a playful purr monster. Thanks to his young age, he was easily socialized and will be adopted into a loving home.

Zeus watched the other cats and their antics. He was one of the last cats to partake of the catnip. One whiff was all it took. He was belly-up, drooling, and chirping at the other cats.

Rocket went from hisser to kisser. ©2009 The HSUS

When Ruby arrived she was thin, unthrifty, and scared. Now she's a beautiful, healthy cat who is calm and content with her new home. She is truly a jewel.

Rocket went from hisser to kisser. When Rocket arrived in Ramona, he wanted nothing to do with anyone. One evening when Kim gave him his food, Rocket allowed her to touch his soft fur and she heard his first purr.

How you can help

The cats removed from San Nicolas Island are out of harm's way and we will continue to rescue additional cats from the island.

If you would like to help us care for Grace and her friends, please make a secure donation online or send a check to The HSUS at 2100 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037 (write “San Nicolas Island Cat Program” in the check’s memo line), or call 202-452-1100.

How can we get rid of ticks?

We have developed a severe tick problem and can't seem to find a solution. It all started about a year ago, when we started finding ticks on the dogs. We had never had a tick problem here before. So we put the dogs on Frontline Plus. We have always had an exterminator spray the house and yard once a month for fleas, so we asked them to start spraying for ticks as well. It did not help. We started seeing ticks in the house on the floor and on the walls. The dogs still were getting them even with… Continue
