Wanted: Individuals with enthusiasm and a desire to help animals. Work from home or travel the developing world. Those who take to the road with us should note that accommodations are less than optimal, and you will often be working long hours in arid or rainforest conditions. The HSUS's Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS) brings veterinary care to poor communities around the globe. Your assistance can make a difference to this program's success.
What you can do at home: (Volunteers in California and Tennessee are especially needed, although some jobs can be done from anywhere in the U.S.)
•Cut drapes (We need 5,000 surgical drapes a year.)
•Prepare instruments
•Help pack for trips
•Conduct telephone follow up (for assessment surveys, etc.)
For those who choose to travel, we have some special needs:
•Educators: Work with children or adults teaching humane education classes at clinics (Elementary school teachers fluent in Spanish are especially needed.)
•Office skills: Handle paperwork at clinics, keep records, help write initial reports
•Hands-on animal assistance:
• General animal handling—hold horses, dogs, cats, and other animals, and/or move them from place to place.
• Run field tests for such problems as heart worm, parvovirus, FeLV, brucellosis, etc.
• RAVS will train those willing to help monitor surgical cases—assist with such tasks as taking a dog's temperature, observing heart rate, and generally monitoring recovery.
•Language skills: Individuals with Spanish-language skills are needed for trips to countries in Latin America.
•General assistance: Help is always needed with clinic setup, cleanup, and transport and with instrument cleaning, repacking, and sterilization.
Professionals also needed:
•Veterinary technicians and individuals with related training are always needed and welcome.
